Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in the village of Smiljan, Austrian Empire (modern-day Croatia). He was the fourth of five children born to Milutin Tesla, a Serbian Orthodox priest, and Georgina Đuka Tesla, an inventive homemaker who created household appliances. From an early age, Tesla demonstrated an extraordinary memory and a talent for mathematics.
Tesla attended the Technical University of Graz in 1875, where he studied engineering. It was here that he first became fascinated with electricity after seeing a Gramme dynamo (a type of electrical generator) and began conceptualizing a motor that would run on alternating current. He later attended the University of Prague but left before completing his degree due to financial difficulties.
In 1884, Tesla arrived in New York City with little more than four cents in his pocket, a book of poetry, and a letter of introduction to Thomas Edison. The letter reportedly read: "I know two great men, and you are one of them; the other is this young man." In 1952, Tesla's remaining possessions were moved to the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia. The museum houses thousands of original documents, books, journals, photographs, and technical objects. In 2012, a crowdfunding campaign led by The Oatmeal comic artist Matthew Inman raised $1.37 million to purchase Tesla's last remaining laboratory at Wardenclyffe and turn it into a museum.
