THE BRILLIANT MIND

Early Life & Education

Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in the village of Smiljan, Austrian Empire (modern-day Croatia). He was the fourth of five children born to Milutin Tesla, a Serbian Orthodox priest, and Georgina Đuka Tesla, an inventive homemaker who created household appliances. From an early age, Tesla demonstrated an extraordinary memory and a talent for mathematics.

Tesla attended the Technical University of Graz in 1875, where he studied engineering. It was here that he first became fascinated with electricity after seeing a Gramme dynamo (a type of electrical generator) and began conceptualizing a motor that would run on alternating current. He later attended the University of Prague but left before completing his degree due to financial difficulties.

Coming to America

In 1884, Tesla arrived in New York City with little more than four cents in his pocket, a book of poetry, and a letter of introduction to Thomas Edison. The letter reportedly read: "I know two great men, and you are one of them; the other is this young man." Tesla began working for Edison, but their relationship soon soured due to fundamental disagreements about electrical systems.

Tesla's brilliance was evident in his ability to visualize complex machines in his mind without needing drawings or models. He claimed to have a photographic memory and could speak eight languages: Serbo-Croatian, Czech, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, and Latin.

REVOLUTIONARY INVENTIONS

Tesla held approximately 300 patents worldwide for his inventions, though some accounts suggest the actual number may be higher. His most significant contributions form the foundation of modern electrical engineering and power distribution systems.

Alternating Current System

Tesla's polyphase alternating current (AC) system, including generators, transformers, and motors, revolutionized power transmission. Unlike direct current (DC), AC could be transmitted over long distances with minimal power loss, making large-scale electrical grids practical.

Tesla Coil

Invented in 1891, the Tesla coil is a resonant transformer circuit that produces high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating-current electricity. It became fundamental to radio technology and is still used today in radio transmitters, medical equipment, and entertainment displays.

Induction Motor

Tesla's induction motor, patented in 1888, uses rotating magnetic fields to generate motion without physical contact between stationary and moving parts. This revolutionary design became the workhorse of industry and remains the most common motor type used today.

Wireless Power & Radio

Tesla envisioned and demonstrated wireless transmission of power years before Marconi's radio experiments. His Wardenclyffe Tower project aimed to transmit messages and power wirelessly across the Atlantic, presaging modern wireless communication.

Remote Control

In 1898, Tesla demonstrated a radio-controlled boat at Madison Square Garden, patenting the first remote control device. This technology laid the groundwork for modern remote controls, drones, and unmanned vehicles.

Fluorescent Lighting

Tesla experimented with gases excited by high-frequency currents, creating some of the first fluorescent lights. He demonstrated wireless lighting by powering gas-filled tubes without wires at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.

THE WAR OF CURRENTS

Tesla vs. Edison

The "War of Currents" was a period of intense competition between Thomas Edison's direct current (DC) system and George Westinghouse's/Tesla's alternating current (AC) system in the late 1880s. Edison launched a propaganda campaign against AC, claiming it was dangerous, even publicly electrocuting animals to demonstrate its hazards.

Despite Edison's efforts, Tesla's AC system proved superior for large-scale power distribution. The turning point came when Westinghouse and Tesla won the contract to illuminate the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, followed by their successful bid to harness Niagara Falls for hydroelectric power generation in 1895.

The Niagara Falls Victory

The installation of Tesla's AC generators at Niagara Falls was a monumental achievement. For the first time, electricity could be generated at a distant location and transmitted efficiently to cities hundreds of miles away. This project conclusively demonstrated AC's superiority and established it as the standard for electrical power systems worldwide.

Autonomous Machines

Tesla has become an iconic figure in popular culture, symbolizing the brilliant but misunderstood genius. He appears in countless books, films, television shows, video games, and music. The electric car company Tesla, Inc., founded by Elon Musk, was named in tribute to the inventor, reflecting Tesla's vision of sustainable energy.

The Tesla Museum

In 1952, Tesla's remaining possessions were moved to the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia. The museum houses thousands of original documents, books, journals, photographs, and technical objects. In 2012, a crowdfunding campaign led by The Oatmeal comic artist Matthew Inman raised $1.37 million to purchase Tesla's last remaining laboratory at Wardenclyffe and turn it into a museum.
